Hyderabad: Taking a step towards eco-friendly initiative, the South Central Railway has set up an automatic coach washing plant at coaching depot, Secunderabad.

The coach washing plant was inaugurated by SCR General Manager, Gajanan Mallya, on Friday. AK Gupta, Divisional Railway Manager, Secunderabad and other senior officials were also present on the occasion.

The plant is a multistage external cleaning system, which uses vertical rotating brushes as well as pressurized water and soap solution jets for cleaning of coach exterior. It can wash a total of 24 coaches in about eight to 10 minutes. Not only will this reduce the manpower requirement, the fresh water consumption for washing the coaches will also get reduced by around 85 per cent, the SCR said in a press release.

While the manual system uses 9600 litres of fresh water, the automatic coach cleaning requires just 1440 litres of fresh water and 5760 litres of recycled water per train. With around 168 coaches washed at the coaching depot, Secunderabad each day, the fresh water saved amounts to a significant 20,848 kilo litres per year.

Gajanan Mallya said the setting up of the automatic coach washing plant affirms the commitment of the zone towards the development and betterment of rail services. He expressed that the coach washing plant will serve as a role-model in cleanliness for Indian Railways.
