Hyderabad: As many as 5,858 cases pertaining to NRI marriages were registered with the National Commission for Women (NCW), according to its chairperson Rekha Sharma here on Friday.
Speaking at a seminar on legal awareness on NRI marital issues organised by Telangana Women Safety Wing (WSW), she underscored the need for proper coordination among investigating agencies in India and abroad to resolve the cases.
She said that more awareness should be created among women about rules in India and abroad before getting married to an NRI. Officials must conduct awareness programmes in educational institutions to caution women about NRI marital issues.
At the same time, women should be educated about cheating cases allegedly committed by several NRIs, she said, adding that the WSW was working effectively compared to police in other States.
Realising the importance of creating awareness on the issue among significant stakeholders and public at large, the NCW is contemplating to conduct a seminar on legal awareness on NRI marital issues faced by women survivors, with an aim to ensure maximum outreach on the issue.
State Commission for Women (SCW) chairperson V Sunitha Laxma Reddy said they had received 15 complaints pertaining to NRI marital issues. With the coordination of various wings including the WSW, the SCW was trying to resolve the cases and render justice to women.
WSW Additional Director-General of Police Swati Lakra said around 728 NRI marriage cases was booked across the State.
