Hyderabad: The first flyover in the city designed for a commuting speed of 60 kmph will be declared open for public in Balanagar on Tuesday. As of now, the maximum speed limit on all city flyovers is 40 kmph.

The Balanagar Flyover will be inaugurated by Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao. The 1.13-km six-lane two-way flyover was built under the Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP) at a cost of Rs 387 crore.

To give the flyover an aesthetic look, greenery is being developed under the flyover. Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) officials will also develop vertical gardens on one or two pillars of the flyover. The project is expected to ease traffic congestion from Kukatpally Y Junction towards Medchal Highway and Rajiv Rahadari. Better flow of traffic can also be expected at the Balanagar Junction, which is among the busiest junctions in these parts of the city.

“The traffic issues faced by commuters through this region for years will be resolved due to the flyover,” a HMDA official said.

One feature that will make the Balanagar Flyover different from most other flyovers is a 6mm thick Asphaltic sheet spread between the bitumen layer and slab of the flyover. Similar sheets were laid on Attapur Flyover and after it yielded good results, it was replicated for the Balanagar Flyover as well, officials said, adding that the sheet would absorb water protecting the concrete and steel of the flyover.
