Suryapet: The ongoing war of words between the ruling TRS and BJP over paddy procurement in the State escalated on Tuesday, with workers of the two parties clashing by pelting stones at each other during State BJP chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar’s visit to paddy procurement centres in Chivvemla and Atmakur (S).

Due to the tense situation at Vatti Khammamphad, Sanjay was forced to drop his plan to visit the IKP centre at Kudakuda. Tension prevailed at Atmakur centre too with the police resorting to lathi-charge to disperse the activists of the ruling party and BJP who indulged in stone-pelting.

Sanjay Kumar met with stiff resistance throughout the day as he wove his way around Nalgonda district. However, he managed to interact with farmers who questioned him over the Centre’s stand on paddy procurement. His efforts to convince the farmers by claiming that it was the State government that was not procuring paddy did not go down well with the farmers.

A group of women farmers also staged a protest at Atmakur (S) IKP centre by holding placards with slogans — ‘Sanjay Go Back’. They demanded the Central government to procure paddy for the yasangi season. As the BJP and TRS members hurled stones, chappals and sticks on each other at Athmakur (S) IKP centre, Sanjay was forced to confine to his vehicle for more than half an hour until the police brought the situation under control.

Winds up tour
As the farmers did not respond positively to his tour, Bandi Sanjay cut short his visit to two IKP paddy procurement centres instead of the planned six centres. As per the schedule, Sanjay was scheduled to visit IKP paddy procurement centres at Kudakuda, Chivvemla, Athmakur(S), Maddirala, Tirumalgiri, Jajireddygudem in the Suryapet district on Tuesday. Tension prevailed at these places with the activists of the ruling TRS and farmers staging protests.

At Chivvemla and Athmakur (S) IKP paddy procurement centres, farmers staged protests demanding the Centre to continue procurement of paddy. Mild tension prevailed at Arvapally when TRS activists attacked the vehicle of Thungathurthy Assembly Constituency BJP in-charge Kadiyam Ramachandram. Police swung into action and brought the situation under control.
