Hyderabad: After assuring farmers that he would initiate necessary steps to make the Central government purchase rice, State BJP president Bandi Sanjay Kumar made a ‘U’ turn making it clear that the Centre would purchase only raw rice but not parboiled rice. “If the Centre is purchasing parboiled rice from any State in the country then I will make it to purchase the same rice from Telangana or else the State government should give entire paddy as raw rice,” he demanded in a statement here on Friday.
Responding to ‘maha dharna’ staged by the TRS at Indira Park demanding that the Centre spell out his policy on paddy procurement, Sanjay said the ruling party achieved nothing from it. He alleged that the entire police department extended support for the dharna. Since rains continue to lash several parts of the State for the last few days, the State government must expedite the process of procuring paddy. “The farmers would face problems if there is any delay in procuring paddy in view of unseasonal rains,” he said.
He took strong exception to what he termed as “highhandedness of the ruling party leaders” during his recent visit to Nalgonda and Suryapet districts to interact with farmers.
