Hyderabad: The Bansilalpet stepwell, considered a heritage structure in Secunderabad, is getting ready for a fresh lease of life, devoid of all the trash that buried it for decades and yes, with fresh water gushing from deep below.
Work on restoration of the well, with the garbage, silt and debris accumulated over the years inside the water body being removed, had begun last year, with latest pictures showing an amazing transformation from a garbage dump to a beautiful architectural work of historical significance.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation had engaged workers and earthmovers for the cleaning process, with several tonnes of garbage being cleared from inside the stepwell near the Nalla Pochamma Temple.
The State government also had announced plans for the structure after restoration, with officials hinting at illumination and facilities to make it a tourist attraction.
The Rainwater Project, a social enterprise headed by Kalpana Ramesh that has restored four stepwells in the city, one each at Gachibowli, Kokapet, Kondapur and Narsingi, is supporting the government in restoration of the Bansilalpet stepwell too. The restoration process involves methods to recharge the groundwater as well.
Urban Development Special Chief Secretary Arvind Kumar tweeted pictures of the stunning transformation of the structure on Saturday.
“Rediscovering Bansilalpet #Stepwell step by step ..” he said, sharing pictures from before and after the restoration.
