Mancherial: A large number of barbers took a rally opposing the inauguration of a modern hair salon by a non-barber from Karimnagar here on Tuesday.
About 200 barbers from various hair salons participated in the rally which began at IB Chowk and ended at Laxmi Talkies cross road. They carried banners seeking ban on entry of people from non-barbers community into the profession. They raised slogans opposing the person’s move to establish his shop, and garlanded the statue of Dr BR Ambedkar during the rally.
Vishnubhaktula Sadanandam, president of town Nayi Brahmana Association, said the person was setting up a posh hair salon though he does not belong to the community. He lamented that barbers, who were relying on the occupation for centuries, would lose livelihood if corporate firms enter the field.
The protesting barbers demanded that the government take steps to prevent outsiders from making a foraying into the occupation. They sought measures to protect their traditional occupation, and recalled that a corporate firm had withdrawn its decision to set up a hair salon following a backlash from the community in the past.
The agitators declared they would close their salons as long as the person is prevented from establishing the salon. They warned that they would intensify their stir if their demand was not meted. They alleged that certain persons were plundering their occupation under the guise of beauty parlors.
The association’s Mancherial district president Iripelli Venkanna, general secretary Jampala Chandraiah, honorary president of the body Adimulam Srinivas, working president Iripelli Bhupati, general secretary Muthyala Sudhakar, treasurer Mutyala Sadanandam, vice-president Kurimilla Srinivas, members Rachakonda Shankar, Kandi Satyam, Pandirla Srinivas, Enagandula Bheemaiah and many others were present.
