Nirmal: The famed Sri Gnana Saraswathi Devasthanam (SGSD) of Basar had an income of Rs 78.24 lakh for a period of 63 days. Counting of hundials was held on the premises of the shrine on Tuesday.

Temple Executive Officer of the temple K Vinod Reddy said that the temple registered revenue of Rs 78,24,281. In addition to that 231 grams of mixed gold and 4.6 kilograms of mixed silver ornaments by way of offerings by devotees and sales of tickets of various rituals from November 8 to January 10. The temple also had 29 foreign currency notes donated by unidentified devotees.

The shrine earned Rs 51.77 lakh from September 30 to November 7. The temple’s governing committee chairman Sharath Pathak, AEO Sudharshan Goud and In-charge supervisor Sanjeev Rao were present. Members of Rajanna-Sircilla Shivashakti organization and devotees took part in the counting.

The SGSD is the only temple that houses goddess Saraswathi in southern India. Parents throng this shrine for performing Aksharabhayasam, a customary ritual for initiating children into education and world of alphabets. It is believed that sage Vyas had worshipped goddess Saraswathi during the times of Mahabharatha by staying on the banks of Godavari.
