Batukamma sarees ensured livelihood to 20,000 weavers: Puvvada
Transport Minister Puvvada Ajay Kumar informed that as many as 3.69 lakh sarees would be distributed to women in Khammam marking Batukamma-Dasara festival.

Khammam: Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s decision to distribute Batukamma sarees to poor women has ensured employment to around 20, 000 weavers, Transport Minister Puvvada Ajay Kumar said on Friday.
The Minister was speaking after formally launching the distribution of Batukamma sarees to women at different places here. He informed that as many as 3.69 lakh sarees would be distributed to women in Khammam marking Batukamma-Dasara festival.
Ajay Kumar noted that the State government was spending around Rs 317 crore on the distribution of Batukamma sarees across Telangana as a festival gift. No other government in the country has taken such a noble initiative for the sake of women.
He recalled that initially the sarees distribution commenced with eight designs. Now there were around 287 designs of sarees available with golden and silver coloured zari work on their borders.
The Chief Minister wanted all the women in Telangana to celebrate Batukamma with happiness. The sarees would be delivered at the doorstep of the beneficiaries by IPK and Anganwadi workers by duly following covid-19 safety guidelines.
Speaking at a programme in Khammam, the Mayor G Papalal and SUDA Chairman Bachu Vijay Kumar informed that around 60, 000 Batukamma sarees would be distributed to women under the limits of Khammam Municipal Corporation limits.
Municipal Commissioner Anurag Jayanthi, Additional Collectors N Shehalatha and N Madhusudhan Rao, trainee Collector Varun Reddy, corpororators Kamartapu Murali, M Manohar and others were present.
In Kothagudem, Pinapaka MLA and Government Whip Rega Kantha Rao launched Batukamma sarees distribution at Pinapaka. Around 3, 48, 418 sarees would be distributed in Kothagudem district.
Aswaraopet former MLA T Venkateswarlu has taken ill and fell unconscious while attending sarees distribution programme at Chandrugonda mandal headquarters. He was rushed to hospital for treatment and his condition was said to be stable.
