Hyderabad: The stink from a fish market is something that puts off even the most ardent of seafood lovers. But at Begum Bazaar, where they used to fight off the stench and somehow manage purchases before rushing off, things are changing.
Hygiene, officials say, will be the most striking factor at the fish market that is being renovated at Begum Bazaar, while traffic chaos, which was another major put-off for many customers, too will be done away with, they say.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is behind the makeover of the fish market, which was inspected by Animal Husbandry Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav on Saturday. He was accompanied by Goshamahal MLA T Raja Singh, other elected representatives and GHMC officials.
“Construction of the market has been completed. This facility has been built at an estimated cost of Rs 9.5 crore on the instructions of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao,” the Minister said, adding that around 500 families would benefit from the facility. Instructions were also given to GHMC officials by Talasani Srinivas Yadav to sanction Rs 33 lakh for laying sewerage lines near the fish market.
Meanwhile, the GHMC officials said the stalls would be allotted to the people who were earlier running their business in the Begum Bazaar Fish Market. The new facility, besides providing a decent workplace for fish vendors, is also aimed at easing traffic congestion as the new market has a dedicated parking lot.
“With this new facility, the meat will no longer be exposed to flies and dust. Vendors will also have a permanent roof unlike earlier. Traffic snarls were a common sight here as the vendors used to sell fish on the road and pavements owing to space crunch. The dedicated parking lot will ease the traffic on the road near the fish market,” they added.
