Leaders of different political parties staged dharna at Bhadrachalam in Kothagudem district on Thursday

Kothagudem: Bhadrachalam bandh called on Thursday by different political parties passed off peacefully and was a success.

The bandh, which was called for to demand demerger of five Telangana gram panchayats (GPs) merged with Andhra Pradesh, was also observed in Cherla and Dummugudem mandals in the district.

All shops, cinema halls, hotels and schools were closed voluntarily during the day in support of the demand. Public transportation was also affected and devotees’ rush at Bhadradri temple was less. A dharna was staged on a national highway by the protestors.

CPI, CPM, TDP , CPI (ML) and Congress leaders, Ravulapalli Ram Prasad, AJ Ramesh, Mecha Venkateswara Rao, Kodali Srinivas, Raja Ram, AJ Ramesh , Budagam Srinivas and Ravulapalli Ravi Kumar addressed the gathering.

They demanded the Central government to take immediate steps to demerge Yetpaka, Gundala, Purushothapatnam, Pichukalapadu and Kannaidudem gram panchayats that were merged with AP following the bifurcation of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh.

The leaders said it was because of the BJP government at the Centre, the GPs were merged with AP in an unscientific manner. Residents in those GPs were not willing to stay in AP but desiring to live in Telangana as districts reorganisation in AP was against their interests.

The Chief Ministers of both the Telugu States should come together to address the issue, the leaders said. Later they participated in a relay hunger strike that reached 7th day on Thursday. The parties have planned to lay siege to district borders on Friday.

In support of the demand leaders like Thammala Venkateswara Rao, M Sudhakar Reddy, Kunja Srinivas, N Nagaraju, T Narasimha Rao, Brahma Chary, Gaddam Ravi, M Renuka, A Sunil, B Sai, Bollisettti Ranga Rao and others took part in the relay hunger strike.
