Mancherial: Unidentified persons allegedly attempted to assault Endowment officials with sticks and iron rods, and by sprinkling chilli powder, while they were surveying the lands of the Sri Jagannath Swamy temple in Chennur on Saturday.
The Endowment officials carried out a survey to identify the temple lands. They removed fences allegedly erected illegally around the temple lands using a tractor. Men and women, who had been cultivating the lands for a long time, objected to the officials’ action, claiming that they would lose their livelihood if the lands were retrieved.
Some men and women attempted to attack the officials with sticks and iron rods. They also tried to sprinkle chilli powder on the officials. The police, who were escorting the officials, intervened and advised them to register their protest peacefully.
However, the officials lodged a complaint with the police. They alleged that certain persons occupying the temple lands were responsible for the attack. Police said a case had been registered against unidentified persons.
