Hyderabad: A team of officials from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Hyderabad Branch Office, carried out a search and seizure operation at a jewellery shop in Pot Market, Secunderabad, on Friday for violating the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016, and the mandatory hallmarking requirements notified by the Government of India.

The enforcement team, led by Kavin K, Sc-C/Deputy Director, and Vijayraj Barbar, Sc-C/Deputy Director, found gold jewellery articles being offered for sale without the mandatory BIS Hallmark during the raid. Such practices are in violation of the provisions governing the sale of hallmarked gold jewellery under the BIS Act, 2016.

The seized stock without BIS Hallmark included 34 yellow gold rings (weight: 164.26 gms), 27 necklaces (weight: 797.07 gms), six bangles (weight: 57.03 gms), 17 chains (weight: 412.72 gms) and 27 earrings (weight: 122.86 gms). BIS has initiated further action under the provisions of the BIS Act, 2016, against the concerned establishment.

For consumer awareness, BIS advised buyers to verify the HUID number through the BIS CARE App before purchasing gold jewellery and to insist on proper invoices for all purchases.

Those who come across instances of misuse of the Hallmark, including jewellery sold without an HUID, can also lodge a complaint using the BIS CARE Mobile App. The BIS website, www.bis.gov.in, and e-BIS (manakonline.in) can be accessed for general information on BIS.
