Hyderabad: The chorus for merger of border villages and districts in neighbouring States with Telangana is growing louder and spreading far and wide, with elected representatives from even the BJP in Karnataka pitching hard for such a move. The reasons? Telangana’s emergence as a progressive State where welfare of the people and development go hand in hand, creating the ideal blend for a high happiness quotient.
After 46 villages from Maharashtra on the Nizamabad and Adilabad district border sought merger with Telangana in the past, a forceful argument for merger with Telangana has now been made by BJP MLA from Raichur City constituency Shivraj Patil in Karnataka governed by BJP. Patil, interestingly, sought the merger in the presence of Ministers and senior party leaders at a programme to discuss farmers’ issues in Raichur. The demand was met with loud applause from the gathering.
Industries Minister K T Rama Rao, responding to a post by a Twitter user on Monday, tweeted: “Validation for Telangana coming from across the border; Karnataka BJP MLA says Raichur should be merged with Telangana and the audience welcomes the suggestion with applause.”
In the video clip, Patil can be heard demanding merger of Raichur with Telangana citing various reasons. The BJP MLA said despite repeated pleas, the Karnataka government was not addressing the farmers’ issues. He appealed to the senior party leaders at the programme to discuss the plight of farmers from the region with the government, or merge Raichur with Telangana.
This is not the first time that people from neighbouring States have demanded merger of villages and districts with Telangana. In 2019, leaders from Nanded, Nalgaon, Bhokar, Degloor, Kinwat and Hathagaon from Maharashtra, met with Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and appealed to him to consider merger of their villages with Telangana. Similarly in 2018, about 40 villages from Dharmabad in Nanded district even passed a resolution seeking merger with Telangana. They met with TRS MLA Bajireddy Goverdhan in Nizamabad and submitted their representation. The villagers said they appreciated Telangana government’s Rythu Bandhu scheme and the support extend to the farming community, and wanted the same for themselves.
In fact, even before the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, the then TDP leader JC Diwakar Reddy and others had strongly favoured creation of “Rayala Telangana” with the inclusion of Anantapur and Kurnool districts from Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh with Telangana State.
