Hyderabad: A day after stand-up comic Munawar Faruqui announced that he would be performing in Hyderabad next month, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Dharmapuri Arvind on Friday threatened that his party will not let him perform here.
He also warned the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K T Rama Rao for welcoming comedians whose shows were banned in Karnataka.
While addressing the media, Arvind said, “KTR, are you a human being? Munawar Faruqui makes jokes on Goddess Sita and his shows were banned back in Karnataka. He is welcoming that guy to Telangana for a comedy show which means the father-son duo thinks Hindu society is comedic. We’ll see how they bring him here.”
Earlier, KTR said that Hyderabad is “truly cosmopolitan” and offers stand-up comedians an “open invite”.
“We don’t cancel shows of Munawar Faruqui and Kunal Kamra just because we are not aligned with them politically,” he added.
Faruqui’s show in Bengaluru was cancelled in November after protests by Hindu right-wing groups, who alleged that he had hurt their religious sentiments in one of his shows. Besides Bengaluru, his shows in Gujarat, Gurgaon, Chhattisgarh, and Goa too were canceled following threats from various Hindutva groups.
On Wednesday, Faruqui took to Instagram to announce his show titled ‘Dhando’ which will be taking place on January 9. Sharing the post, he wrote, “Ticket link in BIO miyaaa.”
The venue is yet to be announced and the tickets are priced from Rs 799, according to the online ticket booking platform BookMyShow.
