Karimnagar: BJP activists on Wednesday staged a dharna in front of the District Collector’s office demanding that the State government purchase fine variety paddy at Minimum Support Price of Rs 2,500 per quintal.

BJP workers led by district president Gangadi Krishna Reddy staged the protest demonstration in which former minister E Peddi Reddy, former MLA Bodige Shobha and others participated.

Speaking on the occasion, party leaders alleged that the State government had pressurized the farming community to cultivate fine variety paddy by introducing the regulated farming system.

Bowing to the pressure of the government, a total of 1,21,970 farmers cultivated fine variety paddy in the district, spending huge amounts and were now facing severe hardships. While a majority of the crops were damaged in the unseasonal rains, the yield had also come down due to insects. Hence, it is the responsibility of the State government to protect the interest of farmers by procuring crops without imposing any restrictions such as discolouring, moisture content and other factors, the BJP leader said.
