New Delhi: The BJP’s Central Election Committee (CEC), which met on Sunday to finalise candidates for the upcoming Legislative Council (MLC) polls in Maharashtra, is learnt to have reviewed organisational preparedness and discussed pending party appointments at both the national and state levels.

Party sources said, the meeting was chaired by BJP president Nitin Nabin and attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and it also understood to have discussed the long-pending formation of the BJP’s Uttar Pradesh organisational team under newly-appointed state unit chief Pankaj Chaudhary.

With Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh just a year away, the BJP is looking forward to putting in place a full-fledged organisational team and sharpening its electoral strategy in the country’s most politically significant state.

Uttar Pradesh, the country’s most populous state, sends 80 Lok Sabha MPs and the state has 403 assembly seats.

Sources said the top leadership also reviewed political developments related to a few other states where organisational and governmental adjustments are due.

The BJP is all set to undertake cabinet expansions in Assam and West Bengal later this week, which will coincide with a broader round of political appointments.

The BJP has already appointed Union minister Harsh Malhotra as the new president for Delhi state unit.

Significantly, Sunday’s BJP CEC’s meeting was held at the prime minister’s residence. Normally it meets at party headquarters located on Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg.

The meeting was also attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP general secretary (organisation) BL Santhosh, and several members of the party’s CEC.

The BJP’s CEC normally meets to discuss candidates for Lok Sabha and state assembly related discussions.

It is not very common for this high-powered body to discuss the candidates for the state legislative council of any state.

Sources said the overall political situation in the country was one of the prime focus in Sunday’s deliberations.

The political discussions at the CEC meeting was held ahead of a meeting of the BJP’s national office-bearers convened by Nabin to mark the completion of 12 years of the Modi government.

The national office bearers meeting is likely to focus on governance outreach, public engagement programmes and the party’s political messaging around the Modi government’s achievements.
