Khammam: A blood donation camp was organised at Khammam at the RPF office here on Friday marking Railway Protection Force (RPF) Raising Day celebrations.
The RPF Khammam unit organised the camp in collaboration with Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Society (TSCS) and Vijayasri Blood Bank for the children suffering from Thalassemia disease in Khammam.
The camp was inaugurated by Indian Medical Association secretary Dr Kurapati Pradeep Kumar. Explaining the importance of blood donation he said donating blood would help health care facilities to have an adequate supply of blood needed in medical emergencies.
Thalassemia is a serious blood disorder inherited through families and it results in the destruction of large numbers of red blood cells which leads to anaemia. Children with thalassemia need frequent blood transfusions to support their growth and development, Dr Kumar noted.
Transfusing or donating blood or its components to the needy person has become a very important part of the modern health care system. Hence every individual has to make it a habit to donate blood regularly and it indicates a clean and healthy lifestyle of a person, he said.
Around 24 donors including RPF officers and staff, railway employees, parcel and licensed porters, auto and taxi drivers, students and passengers voluntarily donated blood to the children suffering from Thalassemia.
