BRS cadre take to streets across Khammam, target congress government

BRS cadres staged protests across erstwhile Khammam district against the arrest of party legislators and alleged police high-handedness. Leaders accused the Congress government of diversionary politics, raised concerns over the Erravalli developments and demanded fulfilment of election promises.

Khammam: The BRS cadres have taken to the streets across erstwhile Khammam, condemning the arrest of the party legislators on Tuesday and police highhandedness against the party’s women MLAs at Assembly on Monday.

Led by former MLA Sandra Venkata Veeraiah, a massive protest rally was held at Vemsoor in the Sathupalli constituency in Khammam, raising slogans against the Congress government.

Speaking on the occasion, Veeraiah stated that the BRS holds the Telangana Legislative Assembly and the Speaker’s office in high regard and that it was never the party’s intention to insult the Speaker or the Assembly.

The government was resorting to diversionary politics to steer attention away from public issues in the Assembly. Alleging that the police had behaved rudely towards the women MLAs, he demanded action regarding the incident.

In a statement, former MLA Rega Kantha Rao stated that the Congress MLAs, who ought to have been attending the Assembly session, must explain why they gathered in the vicinity of former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s residence at Erravalli.

The Congress MLAs conspired to attack the Leader of the Opposition, and it was a severe blow to democracy; the conspirators behind it must be arrested. It was outrageous that the police transported Dalits from Bhongir to Erravalli in vehicles accompanied by dappu (traditional drum) troupes, he said.

At a protest at Kothagudem, the party leader A Rakesh Reddy alleged that the State government was using police forces against the BRS legislators for questioning its failure to deliver the election promises

He demanded the government to fulfill promises such as a monthly allowance of Rs 2,500 for women, jobs, unemployment benefits, the Mega DSC recruitment drive, a job calendar, scooters for students, and one tola of gold under the Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak schemes.

Similar protests were staged on Khammam-Suryapet-Kodad highway in Khammam, at Manuguru and other places in the district.
