Hyderabad: The BRS on Thursday demanded that the Congress government withdraw its proposal to provide Indiramma Houses to the poor at Rs 6 lakh per unit and instead provide free housing as per its election promise. The party also sought the immediate allotment of 39,000 double-bedroom houses completed during the BRS rule and lying vacant in Hyderabad.

Addressing a press conference at the Assembly media point, BRS Legislature Party deputy leader Talasani Srinivas Yadav, along with party legislators and MLCs, said the previous BRS government had built one lakh double-bedroom houses in Greater Hyderabad. However, he criticised the Congress government for failing to construct even a single house in the city during its 30 months in office.

The former Minister said the State government was planning to build only 7,000 to 8,000 houses under the Indiramma Housing Scheme while asking beneficiaries to contribute around Rs 6 lakh, despite promising free houses before the elections. “If the government builds houses and gives them free to the poor, we will welcome it. But we will not accept single-bedroom houses by collecting money from beneficiaries,” he said, accusing the Congress government of going back on its promise of providing free housing to the poor.

He recalled that the BRS government had provided free double-bedroom houses through a lottery system, including in prime locations around the Secretariat. He also accused the Congress government of filing cases against street vendors and criticised its focus on proposing a Fourth City while neglecting Hyderabad’s existing civic issues.

Srinivas Yadav demanded that the government immediately distribute the 39,000 completed double-bedroom houses to eligible beneficiaries. He added that if the government accepted the BRS demand and allotted the houses free of cost, the party would publicly felicitate Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy.
