Hyderabad: The BRS accused the Congress government of failing to protect Dalits and tribals, citing 9,102 atrocity cases registered in Telangana over the past three years, with convictions recorded in only 32 cases.
On Tuesday, a BRS delegation comprising former SC, ST Commission chairman Errolla Srinivas and BRS leaders Meday Rajiv Sagar and Rambal Naik submitted a representation to DGP CV Anand seeking speedy justice for victims. They urged the DGP to launch a Statewide special drive to clear pending atrocity cases, set deadlines for filing charge sheets, ensure FIRs were registered on the day complaints were received and take action against negligent station house officers.
Citing a report released by the Telangana SC, ST Commission on October 1, Srinivas said 213 people, including 159 Dalits and 54 tribals, had been murdered since the Congress came to power. He also pointed to 1,305 cases of sexual assault against girls and women, alleging serious lapses in investigation, evidence collection and prosecution.
He raised concerns over delays in registering FIRs, arresting the accused and providing statutory compensation to victims, who were being forced to stage protests to secure action.
The BRS leader said attacks on Dalits and tribals had been reported during village meetings, temple visits and Bathukamma celebrations. He cited recent incidents in several districts, including the alleged assault on a Dalit youth in Peddapalli district and attacks on Dalit women and elected representatives.
He also sought a comprehensive inquiry into allegations that a circle inspector assaulted tribal woman sarpanch Kursing Kalavathi and the deputy sarpanch during Bathukamma celebrations in Mancherial district.
