Hyderabad: BRS MLC Sravan Dasoju on Monday strongly opposed the proposed reorganisation of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), alleging that it was aimed at erasing the 200-year-old identity of Secunderabad.
He demanded that the government immediately halt the proposal, failing which the BRS would lead a mass movement to protect the history, existence and sanctity of Secunderabad if the plan was pursued.
In a statement, the BRS leader termed the move a cultural assassination masquerading as administrative reform. He asserted that Secunderabad, founded in 1806, was not a mere administrative unit but a historic twin city of Hyderabad with a distinct civic and cultural legacy.
Sravan criticised the Congress government over unilateral and dictatorial decision-making, accusing it of attempting to subsume Secunderabad under a proposed municipal setup linked to Malkajgiri without public consultation. He warned that winning an election, did not give the government a licence to dismantle Secunderabad’s identity or redraw its historic boundaries. He said any attempt to erase the name and identity of Secunderabad would be an attack on the self-respect of its people. He cautioned that such actions would invite strong opposition.
