Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) postponed the Maha Dharna planned in Mahabubabad on Thursday, which was to extend support to the tribals and farmers of Lagacherla. The decision to postpone came after the police declined permission in the last minute. The party has decided to approach the High Court for permission and hold a massive dharna with 50,000 people.

Addressing the media in Mahabubabad , former Minister and BRS MLC Sayavathi Rathod said the Congress government denied permission fearing exposure of its land-grabbing practices. She said the government was worried over BRS working president KT Rama Rao’s support for the victims of Lagacherla and denied permission in the last minute to suppress dissent.

She criticised the government for targeting tribals and the marginalised by acquiring their lands, terming it a grave injustice. “A large number of BRS cadre, tribal organisations and civil rights organisations, planned to participate in the Maha Dharna to highlight these injustices and expose Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s complicity in such actions for his brothers and son-in-law. That is why the police denied us permission in the last minute, despite us seeking permission two days ago,” she said.

Condemning the behaviour of some police officials, Satyavathi Rathod said they were acting as agents of the Congress party.

“We have immense respect for law enforcement, but such partisan behaviour is unacceptable,” she said. She condoned the police treatment of BRS which was in power for a decade and warned that their actions would have consequences once the BRS returned to power.

She also pointed out the hypocrisy, stating that while the police denied permission for a peaceful demonstration, they were not initiating any action against the Congress legislators, who are publicly threatening to attack the BRS with stones. She assured that the protest would be held on a larger scale and urged public and tribal associations to remain steadfast in their support for the cause.
