Hyderabad: The BRS demanded Rs 1 crore compensation each for the family of a student who died and for another who was critically injured in an accident during a Dandiya night at MVSR Engineering College in Nadergul on Saturday night. The party also sought criminal action against those responsible and an inquiry into alleged safety lapses.

Questioning the permissions granted for the event, for which entry tickets were reportedly priced at Rs 350, BRS MLC Dasoju Sravan asked how the Education Department and police had allowed a commercial programme without adequate safety arrangements. He demanded that the government make public the written permissions issued by the departments and identify the officials who approved the event.

In a representation to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, the BRS leader alleged that the college had failed to ensure fire safety, crowd control, first aid and emergency medical facilities despite thousands of students attending the event.

Sravan demanded an impartial inquiry by a senior IAS or IPS officer and criminal cases against the college correspondent, principal and event organisers. He also sought action against officials found responsible for granting permissions. The demands include Rs 1 crore compensation from the college for the deceased student’s family, government ex gratia and free advanced medical treatment for the injured student.

He called for a review of the college’s approvals and recognition, penalties for institutions violating safety norms, and standard operating procedures for cultural events in educational institutions. He said those responsible for the alleged negligence must be held accountable and justice must be delivered to the affected families.
