BRS slams Congress government for failure to take up people’s issues in council

BRS leader V Madhusudhana Chary accused the Telangana government of ignoring key issues, disregarding BAC decisions and deploying excessive police during Assembly and Council proceedings. Party leaders also alleged that members were denied entry and criticised the suspension of two BRS MLCs

Hyderabad: Slamming the Congress government for failing to take up several key issues for discussion and for heavy police deployment in the Assembly and Council, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) demanded that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy apologise for the way the legislative Council proceedings were conducted in the State.

The Chief Minister claims that the Congress government was implementing the ‘Seventh Guarantee’ in the form of protecting democratic values. If that was the case, why was a heavy police force deployed on the Assembly and Council premises, asked Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Council, V Madhusudhana Chary.

The Congress government’s failure and hollowness were exposed during the Council sessions, he said. The House was convened merely to serve the government’s needs and interests, while decisions taken by the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) were disregarded, he charged.

“The BRS submitted adjournment motions every day, but all of them were rejected. The party also pitched 20 issues for discussion, but the government ignored them. The Congress feared discussion as it had achieved nothing during its 1,000-day rule in the State,” he said at a press conference here on Sunday.

The police obstruction of BRS MLAs and MLCs outside the Assembly premises was a conspiracy, he alleged. BRS members were denied entry into the House for wearing pink T-shirts. Marshals were deployed inside the Assembly and the Council, he said, adding, “I too served as a Speaker. Even in united Andhra Pradesh, there was never such a massive police deployment and overzealous action.”

The LoP in the Council also found fault with the ruling party for suspending two BRS MLCs without any discussion. “Fearing that a vote would lead to the disqualification of MLCs who had defected, the ruling party suspended our members. It was all preplanned,” Madhusudhana Chary charged.

MLC Surabhi Vani Devi said women MLAs were subjected to “terrible insult” and maintained that if justice was not delivered here, the party would approach New Delhi.

“About 500 police personnel were deployed around 40 public representatives. Is this the respect offered to MLAs and MLCs?” she asked.

About a 463-page Bill was presented to the members minutes after the Chairman announced its introduction in the Council. How could the members read 463 pages in such a short time and argue properly, she questioned, adding, “The ruling party treated a Bill of such importance in a perfunctory manner.”

MLC Deshapati Srinivas charged that since the Congress government could not achieve anything substantial during its 1,000 days in power, it had adopted a confrontational attitude towards the BRS.

“Why was there no discussion on the River Krishna and Godavari water shares and on the implementation of the six guarantees?” he asked.

“BRS chief K Chandrashekhar Rao had taken 43 decisions in the first Cabinet meeting after becoming the Chief Minister. Did Revanth Reddy take a single decision that benefited the people of Telangana?” Srinivas asked.
