Peddapalli: BRS leaders along with farmers staged a rasta roko at the Kalvasrirampur market yard on Saturday, demanding that the government speed up the paddy and maize procurement process. Speaking on the occasion, the agitating BRS leaders alleged that the Congress leaders, who had promised to purchase every grain without any irregularities, had forgotten their promise after coming to power. For every quintal, two kilograms of paddy was discounted during weighing, causing losses to the farmers.
Despite the MLA’s instructions against discounting during the weighing of excess paddy, additional crop was weighed at paddy procurement centres. Both the Collector and the officials were cheating the farmers, they alleged. The Collector had visited the mandal twice when farmers were not available and hence the farmers failed to explain their problems to the Collector.
The situation of maize farmers was miserable. It was the responsibility of Markfed to provide everything. However, the farmers were asked to bring gunny bags, fill the crop in the bags and weigh it. They demanded that the government speed up the procurement process.
