Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has stepped up its offensive against the Congress government, seeking to turn agrarian distress and farmers’ grievances into a Statewide political campaign. Party working president KT Rama Rao launched a series of public meetings and field visits across North Telangana this month, beginning with Adilabad on Sunday.
The campaign, centred on the slogan “Rythu Garjana”, is aimed at highlighting the failed promises of the Revanth Reddy government and betrayal of farmers. It will also seek to reach out to agricultural labourers and other sections affected by the government’s policies. The programme marks an attempt by the Opposition party to build pressure on the ruling Congress through direct mobilisation.
With Rama Rao’s first public meeting in Adilabad on Sunday receiving massive response from farmers and the BRS cadre, the party has decided to leave no stone unturned for the next three meetings scheduled to be held over next one month. He will address similar meetings in Nirmal on November 11 and Nizamabad on November 19. A Deeksha Diwas rally and public meeting are scheduled in Karimnagar on November 29.
During these visits, the BRS working president is reaching out to the families of farmers who died by suicide due to crop losses and mounting debts. The party is also extending financial assistance to the bereaved families to instill confidence and also highlight the Congress government’s failure to stand with farmers during loss of their family breadwinner.
The party has particularly sought to focus on Adilabad, which was adopted by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. The suicides of six farmers in the district in October have become a major political issue for the BRS. It has accused the Congress government of discontinuing the previous BRS regime’s Rythu Bima scheme, which provided financial support to the families of deceased farmers.
Besides addressing public meetings, Rama Rao will hold separate interactions with senior district leaders, former public representatives and mandal-level coordinators.
The discussions will focus on the political situation, strengthening the party organisation and chalking out agitations on local public issues.
The campaign is also intended to revitalise the BRS cadre and consolidate its organisational network in its traditional stronghold of North Telangana. The party is seeking to bring farmers’ distress to the centre of the political debate, challenging the Congress government over the agrarian crisis.
On the other hand, BRSLP deputy leader T Harish Rao has been conducting extensive field visits to inspect withered paddy fields, and extending solidarity to the farmers who lost their crops. Over the last one month, Harish Rao toured Siddipet, Gajwel, Mahabubabad, Warangal, Kumuram Bheem Asifabad district, highlighting the Congress government’s policies and failure to supply irrigation water and power, procurement delays and also delayed Rythu Bharosa financial assistance which had adverse impact on the local crop cycles.
Senior leaders and former Ministers P Sabitha Indra Reddy, G Jagadish Reddy, S Niranjan Reddy, Jogu Ramanna, Vemula Prashanth Reddy, Errabelli Dayakar Rao, V Srinivas Goud and several others are also touring their respective districts extensively. They are reaching out to farmers and providing them support.
