BRS urges SC to take suo motu cognisance of concerns over ECI functioning

The BRS has urged the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognisance of concerns over the Election Commission's functioning and order a court-monitored inquiry. Party working president KT Rama Rao said this was necessary to restore public confidence in the electoral process.

Hyderabad: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) has urged the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognisance of concerns over the functioning of the Election Commission of India (ECI) and order a court-monitored inquiry. The party emphasised the urgent need to restore public trust in the constitutional body, which was facing a severe crisis of confidence.

In a statement here on Saturday, party working president KT Rama Rao said the ECI, which is a constitutional body, should remain above suspicion and argued that no agency other than the Supreme Court could credibly investigate the concerns being raised about its functioning.

“ECI is a constitutional body. We cannot believe any other agency to investigate other than the Supreme Court of India. The Supreme Court needs to take cognisance of what former Election Commissioners are saying and launch a suo motu inquiry into the matter. Hopefully, some answers will come out and the truth will prevail,” he said.

The BRS working president recalled leading his party delegation to New Delhi to meet three Election Commissioners and raise concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. He said the party had also formally raised the issues during the Bihar elections, urging the poll panel to address apprehensions, clarify ambiguities and ensure transparency in the revision process.

He said serious doubts continued to persist despite the representations made to the commission. He maintained that an inquiry monitored by the Supreme Court was necessary to address the concerns and restore confidence in the electoral process.
