Hyderabad: Amid heavy police presence and attempts by Congress councillors to delay the elections further, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) won the Ibrahimpatnam Municipal Chairman elections.
BRS councillor T Sudarshan Reddy was elected as the Chairman and BJP councillor Muthyala Shyamala Bhaskar was elected as the Vice Chairperson on Saturday.
The candidatures of T Sudarshan Reddy from BRS and Akula Yadagiri from Congress were proposed for the Chairman post. The elections were conducted through the show of hands method and a majority of the councillors supported the candidature of T Sudarshan Reddy.
However, even before the elections commenced, the Congress councillors raised a few objections. Citing court cases against three councillors, they wanted the elections to be deferred till the court orders, according to reports.
But, the officials clarified that the election notification was issued as per the High Court orders. Stressing that there were no legal hurdles in conducting the elections, they continued the proceedings and declared the results, reports said.
