BRS women MLAs to approach NCW, NHRC over alleged police manhandling

BRS women MLAs P Sabitha Indra Reddy, V Sunitha Laxma Reddy and Kova Lakshmi left for New Delhi to approach the NCW and NHRC over alleged police manhandling during a confrontation outside the Telangana Assembly. They are scheduled to meet officials on Friday.

Hyderabad: BRS MLAs P Sabitha Indra Reddy, V Sunitha Laxma Reddy and Kova Lakshmi left for New Delhi on Thursday to lodge complaints with the National Commission for Women (NCW) and National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) over the alleged manhandling of women legislators by the police during a confrontation outside the Telangana Assembly on September 7. Along with former Minister G Jagadish Reddy, MLA Palla Rajeshwar Reddy and MLC Surabhi Vani Devi, they are scheduled to meet the NCW chairperson and NHRC officials on Friday.

Speaking to media at Saifabad police station after lodging a formal complaint on assault and insult during the scuffle, Sabitha Indra Reddy alleged that police personnel behaved in an inhuman manner. She said she was held by the throat and dragged by the hair, while Sunitha Laxma Reddy’s saree was pulled.

Stating that around 500 personnel were deployed to prevent them from entering the Assembly premises, she questioned the deployment of male police personnel in front of women legislators.

The former Home Minister said BRS leaders had already complained to the Command Control Centre but received no response. She alleged that instead, cases were registered against 14 persons including the women legislators. She demanded action against those responsible and sought registration of their complaint at Saifabad police station.
