Hyderabad: Several BRSV student activists were arrested by police here on Monday after they tried to hold a press conference over unfulfilled promises made by the Congress party during the assembly elections ahead of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s scheduled visit to the Osmania University campus on August 21.

BRSV general secretary Jangaiah said the Congress government, in its first budget after coming to power, had promised to allocate a special budget for all universities and focus on their development, but it completely ignored its promise.

Stating that the Congress party had assured to recruit both teaching and non-teaching vacancies in the universities, he wanted the government to release details of how many posts were actually filled so far.

The BRSV student activists questioned the government regarding its assurance of Rs 10,000 monthly fellowships for research scholarships and Rs 50,000 as honorarium to part-time lecturers. They also questioned the Rs 5 lakh Vidya Bharosa card and Rs 4,000 monthly unemployment allowance that was promised to students and unemployed youth during the assembly elections.

Jangaiah demanded the government immediately release pending Rs 8,145 crore fee reimbursement arrears and scholarships of eligible students.
