Hyderabad: A cab driver allegedly fled with a bank cash box containing Rs 25 lakh in Balanagar on Wednesday.
According to the police, a customer had approached the City Union Bank branch at Balanagar to withdraw Rs 25 lakh. As the branch did not have sufficient cash, the bank manager instructed Assistant Manager Nagarjuna and a security guard to bring the required amount from the bank’s Secunderabad head office.
The officials booked a cab and collected the cash box. During the journey, the driver, Usman Ali (40), who allegedly realised that the box contained a large amount of money, plotted to divert the attention of the bank officials and escape with it.
“Pretending that the car’s battery had failed, he asked the security guard to push it. Though his initial escape attempt failed, upon reaching the bank he tricked the staff into stepping out of the car and fled with the cash box,” officials said.
Based on the bank’s complaint, Balanagar police booked a case and efforts are on to nab Usman Ali and recover the stolen amount.
