Hyderabad: The State Cabinet has decided to conduct elections at the earliest for 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations whose council terms have already concluded.
A dedicated commission submitted its report and, based on its recommendations, reservations have been finalised. With Mahasivaratri scheduled for February 15 and Ramzan on February 16, followed by annual examinations, the Cabinet decided to hold the municipal elections soon, Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy said on Sunday.
The 27th State Cabinet meeting was held at Medaram, during which the issue of the takeover of Hyderabad Metro Rail from L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad was discussed at length. For further details, officials have been directed to circulate the files for discussion at the next Cabinet meeting, he said at a press conference.
“The Cabinet has approved land acquisition for Metro Phase II A and B at an estimated cost of Rs 2,787 crore,” Srinivas Reddy said.
A decision has also been taken to construct a flyover from ICCC, Hyderabad, to Shilpa Layout Road, covering a stretch of nine km. This is expected to ease traffic congestion in the area, he added.
The Minister said the Godavari Pushkaralu would be conducted from July 27 to August 3, 2027. All historic temples along the river from Basara to Bhadrachalam would be developed, and an ecotourism circuit would also be created.
A consultant has been roped in to study and submit a report on measures for permanent development. In addition, a Cabinet sub-committee will be constituted to execute the works, with a final decision to be taken by March 31. He also said that land allocation for central and State sector units had been approved at 14 locations across the State.
