Cancer cases rising among adolescents and young adults, ICMR Study

Hyderabad: A recent comprehensive publication on cancers among adolescents and young adults within the age group of 15 years and 39 years, by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) from the data available in Population Based Cancer Registries (PBCR) across the country including Hyderabad, has indicated that cancers of mouth, tongue and leukaemia in males and breast and thyroid cancers among females are on the rise.

The ICMR study from the PBCR data, published by Elsevier in ScienceDirect journal on March 5, projected that by 2025 the number of cases of cancer among both the genders in adolescent and young adult category will rise to 1,78,617.

 

In the 15 to 39 years category, the study said that cancers were found to be higher among females than males. The cancers of breast, thyroid, mouth and tongue were leading between 30 and 39 years and there was a decline in cervical cancer incidence in more than two decades, the study said.

The ICMR researchers noted that there was a need to spread awareness about cancers in the 15 to 39 years demographic group. Lifestyle choices such as no tobacco and alcohol use, being physically active and maintaining weight, have become vital for this age group. As part of the study, the researchers analysed cancer data of nearly 900 patients from Hyderabad. The crude rate, which is the number of cancer cases for 1,00,000 population, for Hyderabad among males was 30, and 33.2 among females. The cumulative risk of developing cancer for males in Hyderabad is 1 in 124 while for females it was 1 in 110.

“Cancers in the Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) population are a concern. Since AYA oncology appears to be evolving in India, a robust healthcare system and suitable AYA cancer care policies and programmes are strongly needed to improve disease outcomes and survival,” it said.
