Car used for smuggling marijuana catches fire at Hyderabad’s ORR

Hyderabad: A technical snag that sparked off a fire from the engine of a car, threw water on the plans of a marijuana smuggling gang on the Outer Ring Road here on Saturday.
According to the police, the yet to be identified smuggler or smuggling gang’s plan to ferry marijuana by packing the drug into sachets and concealing them in the bonnet of a car worked well all the way from Vijayawada in the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh till Pedda Amberpet on the ORR on the outskirts of Hyderabad.
The plan misfired when the engine caught fire, just after the car, which had its registration plates marked TS 08 HJ 2026, crossed Abdullapurmet.
“The fire broke out in the engine and the driver, who saw thick plumes of smoke coming out of the bonnet, immediately stopped the car on the roadside and fled the spot. Motorists passing by to douse the fire opened the bonnet and found the marijuana sachets in it,” police said.
Locals alerted the Abdullapurmet police, who reached the spot and seized the car along with the contraband and shifted it to the police station. A case has been booked under sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and the Indian Penal Code and are investigating.
The police are trying to track down the owner of the car and the driver as well. Footage from surveillance cameras on the ORR is being examined to identify the driver if possible, officials said, adding that the worth of the seized marijuana too was being ascertained.
