Hyderabad: In a ground-breaking medical feat, CARE Hospitals, Hi-Tech City, successfully performed a highly complex brain surgery to remove a fired bullet projectile from a critical area of the brain.
The procedure was carried out on Gulem Mohamud Hersi, a 26-year-old young patient from Somalia, who sustained a gunshot injury to the head in his home country. He was airlifted to Hyderabad and brought to CARE Hospitals in a comatose state, presenting with severe neurological deficits, including weakness in both hands and legs.
The neurosurgical team led by Dr. Laxminadh Sivaraju, Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon, performed a high-risk surgical intervention. Dr. Sivaraju said, “the bullet was lodged in a highly sensitive and critical region of the brain. The surgery required utmost precision and planning. Successfully removing the projectile without compromising vital brain functions was a significant challenge.”
The surgery marks a first-of-its-kind procedure due to the complexity involved in extracting a foreign object from such a delicate area of the brain. Post-operatively, the patient showed remarkable improvement and is currently on the path to a smooth and steady recovery.
