Case registered over fake AI video of top Kerala cop
Kerala Police registered a cyber fraud case after an AI-generated fake video impersonating ADGP P Vijayan circulated on Facebook, falsely promoting an old currency note scam. Police are investigating the account, possible victims and whether similar deepfake videos targeted other officials
Thiruvananthapuram: A case has been registered after an AI-generated fake video featuring a senior Kerala Police officer was circulated on social media to allegedly defraud the public, police said on Sunday.
The fake Facebook reel depicts ADGP (Law and Order) P Vijayan in official uniform, with his image and voice deceptively modified to promote a scam involving the sale of old currency notes.
In the altered audio, the officer’s fake voice claims that no registration fee is required and that individuals could earn up to Rs 25 lakh, officials said.
According to police, the fraudulent video was uploaded on August 1, 2026, by a Facebook page.
During cyber patrolling, the video came to the notice of police and a case was registered at the Thiruvananthapuram Cyber Police Station on August 7, police said.
The case was registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act for impersonation, forgery and cyber fraud.
Police said an investigation based on the mobile phone number given in the Facebook account has been started.
It is also being checked whether the fraudster cheated anybody in this fashion.
Police said it was being probed whether similar fake videos featuring other police officers and politicians were circulated through social media platforms.
