Sangareddy: A cashier, who was taken into custody after being accused of stealing Rs 59.50 lakh from a cotton mill, allegedly touched a live electric wire in a bid to end his life at Turkawadgaon in Kangti mandal on Thursday night.

The incident came to light on Saturday as the police kept it a secret while the cashier was battling for life in hospital. According to sources, the cashier Mahadev Appanna (46) was working at Samarth Cotton Mill at Turkawadgaon. Last Thursday, the company got Rs 1 crore from the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI), which the company has to distribute to farmers from whom it purchases cotton.

The cashier distributed Rs 40.5 lakh to farmers. Later, he complained to owner Vivek that the remaining Rs 59.5 lakh had gone missing from the locker in the company. When Vivek arrived at the company, he found the empty locker open. He immediately called Narayankhed DSP Venkateshwar Reddy. The DSP and Inspector Chandrashekhar Reddy took Appanna into custody.

After a few hours of interrogation, Appanna informed the police that he would show the amount if they take him to the cotton mill. When the police reached the place in their vehicle, Appanna got down from the police vehicle and touched a live electric wire near a transformer in a bid to end his life.

The police called 108 ambulance and rushed him to the government hospital in Sangareddy. Later, he was taken to Hyderabad following the doctor’s advice as his condition turned critical.

His family members and friends alleged that Appanna touched the live wire, unable to bear the harassment of the police. The police have refused to make any comments on the entire episode.
