Hyderabad: The Delhi unit of CBI on Thursday arrested three persons for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from a complainant claiming they were personal assistants (PAs) of an MP. Durgesh Kumar Maurya, one of the three arrested persons, works as a driver for MP Kavitha Maloth in New Delhi. The two other arrested were Rajib Bhattacharya and Shubhangi Gupta. The CBI laid a trap and nabbed the trio while allegedly demanding and accepting bribe from Manmeet Singh Lamba at the MP’s flat in Saraswathi building, BD Marg, New Delhi.

In his complaint, Lamba said Bhattacharya, who introduced himself as MP’s PA, demanded money for saving his house, which is under construction at Sardar Nagar, from getting demolished by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). He said Bhattacharya claimed that an officer known to him could help him in the matter.

He was then introduced to Shubhangi Gupta, who claimed to be the MP’s coordinator. Shubhangi Gupta later introduced Kumar claiming that he was also a PA to Kavitha Maloth. Bhattacharya, Shubangi Gupta and Kumar reportedly demanded Rs 5 lakh as bribe to save Lamba’s home, the FIR said adding the trio agreed to accept Rs 1 lakh after much negotiations. The trio exerted pressure on Lamba to settle the matter as early as possible, they said.

MP says one of accused was her driver

Meanwhile, MP Kavitha Maloth said that she doesn’t know the people who were arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Delhi in connection with a bribe case, claiming they were her personal assistants (PAs). “I visited Sri Anjaneya Swamy Temple in Kondagattu to seek blessings today and returned to Hyderabad when I started receiving calls about the case,” she said in a video message. She said she was also supervising various works in her constituency.

Among the three arrested persons, Durgesh Kumar Maurya was appointed as her driver recently, she said adding that staff quarters was given to him.

“I didn’t know the two other arrested persons,” she said clarifying that she did not appoint any PA in New Delhi ever since she was elected as an MP. She said the arrested persons should be punished as per the law.
