CBI case against five Income Tax officials and a Chartered Accounant in Hyderabad

IT officers who misued information about those who claimed high IT refunds, were to issue notices to them, but contacted them to get undue advantage into their accounts

Hyderabad: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a case against five Hyderabad-based officials of the Income Tax department and a chartereed accountant on charges of extorting money from income tax assessees.

A Bureau press release said the Income Tax officials included two Inspectors and three Senior Tax Assistants and a private person – a Chartered Accountant. The IT officials were working from the office of the CIT (DR)-II, B.Bench, ITAT, Hyderabad; Sr. Tax Assistant in the ITO, Ward 12(1), Aayakar Bhawan, Hyderabad; Sr. Tax Assistant in Pr. CIT (AU-4), Kondapur, Hyderabad. The press release said the officers cheated Income Tax Assesses and obtained undue advantage for themselves.


The officials were alleged to have misused the data circulated by Income Tax Department in respect of the Income Tax Assesses, who claimed high IT Refunds, with directions to send notices for initiating enquiry. Misusing the said data, the accused public servants contacted the assesses over phone and threatened them with hefty penalties.

Further, the accused officers allegedly obtained undue advantage into the accounts of accused Chartered Accountant (private person) and got the same transferred into their accounts. Searches were conducted by CBI on the premises of the accused at six places at Hyderabad which led recovery of some incriminating documents. Investigation is continuing.
