Celebrated Indian Tennis icon Syed Asif Quadri from Hyderabad no more

Syed Asif Quadri’s name was synonymous with excellence in tennis during the 1950s and 1960s. His crowning achievement came in 1954 when he represented India at the prestigious Wimbledon Championships.

Hyderabad: Legendary Indian tennis player Syed Asif Quadri, who hailed from Hyderabad, passed away on Monday (February 3) in Rosamond in California of the United States, according to his family members.
He was 88 and is survived by two daughters. Asif Quadri was suffering from complications due to sepsis.

Known as an unparalleled talent and a key figure in Indian sports, Quadri leaves behind a legacy as a pioneer in tennis, a visionary entrepreneur, and a beloved family man.


Born on November 19, 1936, in Hyderabad, Syed Asif Quadri’s name became synonymous with excellence in tennis during the 1950s and 1960s. He dominated the courts as the No. 1 player in Hyderabad and Mysore States and ranked No. 2 in all of India. His crowning achievement came in 1954 when he represented India at the prestigious Wimbledon Championships. Quadri’s skill, precision, and sportsmanship brought global recognition to Indian tennis and inspired countless athletes.

Beyond tennis, Quadri was a multi-sport prodigy, excelling in cricket, softball, and golf. His accomplishments off the field were equally remarkable. A graduate of the College of Engineering Bangalore, Quadri chose a career in engineering and later emerged as a successful businessman, establishing ventures in petroleum, transportation, and real estate both in India and the United States.

Reflecting on his impact, Quadri’s granddaughter, Shazaan Fatima Hashim, shared, “My grandfather was kind, dedicated and loving. His family, especially his grandchildren, held a cherished place in his heart. A lifelong enthusiast of tennis, he found joy in the sport, avidly watching matches with passion and excitement, even in his later years.”

Quadri’s extraordinary life was deeply influenced by his lineage, tracing back to the fourth Caliph Ali ibn Abi Talib and the Sufi Shaykh Abdul Qadir Gilani. Despite his vast accomplishments, his humility and affection for his family stood out, endearing him to all who knew him.

Syed Asif Quadri was laid to rest on Wednesday in Rosamond, CA.
