Hyderabad: Bolugula Chandu, a 19-year-old from Jangaon, won a gold medal in Kung Fu category of the 5th International Nepal Games Heroes Cup on Saturday after defeating his Korean opponent 5-4 in the final.
However, a few days ago, his participation was in doubt with Chandu struggling to pool in required amount for his travel. Thanks to the timely intervention of K T Rama Rao, Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development, Industries & Commerce, Chandu not only made it to the tournament but returned with flying colours.
Chandu needed over 25,000 for his travel to the tournament. He released a note asking for donors and tagged KTR on twitter. The Minster swung into action immediately, alerting Office of KTR who arranged the amount for his travel. “Thanks to KTR sir for the support. I could travel to the tournament because of the money he arranged for me. I was determined to perform well after the support. I wanted to bring laurels to the State and the country and I am happy I could do that,” said Chandu from Nepal.
Chandu made it to the Indian team after winning in the national meet in Goa. The Degree first year student of Sainik College, Warangal, defeated his opponent from Bhutan 5-3 in the first round and Nepal 5-3 in the semifinals. He then downed Korean opponent 5-4 in the summit clash for the yellow medal.
Chandu, who started playing karate when he was in the eighth class in his hometown in Bachannapet village in Jangaon district because of his master Doddi Sreenu, wants to bring more laurels to the country and needs financial assistance for his dream.
