Hyderabad: People in large numbers flocked the historic Charminar on Tuesday afternoon, as rumours of a secret passage being unearthed during some digging work taken up at the monument flew wild.
During the course of work taken up by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to set up a generator to provide illumination during power outages at Charminar, some slabs were unearthed, according to officials.
Mistaking them to be part of some elaborate stairwell network or the much talked about secret passage from the historic monument, locals started gathering around the work site. Some local politicians too joined the crowds and objected to the work being taken up near the protected monument.
Meanwhile, officials from various departments and also senior officials from the ASI reached the spot and inspected the unearthed portion.
Later, officials rejected rumours of any new network of stairwell or secret passage being unearthed. “It was a slab that was laid few years back which had surfaced during the work taken up today. As of now we have stopped the work and the issue will be investigated into,” a senior official said.
