Charminar plaster peels off after heavy rain in Hyderabad

A portion of the outer plaster on the Laad Bazaar-facing side of Charminar peeled off following heavy rain in Hyderabad on Tuesday night. Officials said the damage was limited to the surface layer and did not affect the monument’s structural stability.

HYDERABAD: A portion of the outer white cement plaster on the Laad Bazaar-facing side of the historic Charminar peeled off and fell following a spell of heavy rain in Hyderabad’s Old City on Tuesday night.

Security personnel promptly cleared the fallen debris from the area to prevent inconvenience to visitors and pedestrians.

Officials said the damage was confined to the outer plaster or stucco layer and had no bearing on the structural stability of the monument. They said similar instances of minor plaster peeling had been reported during heavy downpours in previous monsoon seasons, primarily due to water seepage through hairline cracks in the outer surface.

“It is a small damage; we conducted an inspection. A report will be sent to the higher officials about it,” said an official concerned.

The area received around 37 mm of rainfall during the spell, which lasted for about 30 minutes.
