Karimnagar: Farmers and people from Choppadandi constituency, under the aegis of JAC Buporata Samithi, on Monday staged a dharna at the District Collectorate demanding that the State government withdraw its decision to acquire land for construction of a parallel flood flow canal in the constituency.
The State government decided to construct a parallel flood flow canal in Choppadandi constituency as part of the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme. To acquire land for the proposed project, a notification was also published on December 1, 2021. Officials have begun conducting grama sabhas in this regard.
Speaking on the occasion, the agitating people said there was no scarcity for water in the constituency since link-tanks located in various villages of the segment were filled with water from Yellampalli and other projects. There was no need to construct a new canal since 99 per cent of the lands in the constituency have been covered by Kakatiya canal and flood flow canals dug in 2004.
People are also worried about acquisition of houses and house sites for the proposed project, they said, and urged the government to suspend the grama sabhas and cancel the land acquisition notification.
