Recreations when done right can elevate the original to another level and not to mention attract a brand new audience to an oldie. But, in case of Shilpa Shetty’s ’90s romantic number Chura ke dil mera also starring her former flame Akshay Kumar, the remix fell flat on its face.
Actor Shilpa Shetty released a new song, Chura ke dil mera 2.0 from her upcoming film Hungama 2 on her social media handle. Sharing a still of herself with actor Meejan Jafri, the actor tweeted, “Here it is, OLD wine in a NEW Bottle. Missed the OG @akshaykumar, but #Filhaal, it’s time to steal @MeezaanJ’s heart #ChuraKeDilMera 2.0 song is out now! An ode from all of us to late #SarojKhan ji… #Hungama2 @DisneyplusHSVIP #Venus (sic).”
The original song from the 1994 film Main Khiladi Tu Anari starred Shilpa Shetty and Akshay Kumar shot across beachy locales and a yacht. It was choreographed by late Saroj Khan and went on to be a popular track during the time.
But, fans don’t seem to have liked the new version going by the first reactions on YouTube and Twitter. Some called the track a poor imitation of the original which was sung by Alka Yagnik and Kumar Sanu. One user wrote, “#ChurakeDilMera 2.0 out now.. Meanwhile Me Nd My Bois missing Young #AkshayKumar nd the soulful voices Alka Ji nd Sanu da be like..” While film critic Rohit Jaiswal’s opinion was scathing. “I was expecting a better comeback from @TheShilpaShetty…Honestly I love her dedication towards her profession and fitness but with #Hungama2 she has made a wrong choice Saw #ChuraKeDilMera video now I must say PAINFUL,what was the need to kill a GOOD song. Choreography level thumbs down.” Another user pointed out how certain songs are masterpieces and not meant to be remade.
Here is how Tweeple responded in memes.
