Adilabad: Members of different communities staged a rasta-roko on Adilabad-Utnoor road following demolition of illegal structures built on the banks of a nala in Indervelli mandal centre, touted as a birthplace of tribal movements, on Saturday.

The protestors including members of Banjara, Mathura, Vanjari and many other backward communities blocked traffic for a while. They shut down commercial establishments in protest of the demolitions. They alleged that the government was targeting them by razing down their houses by acting on complaints received from some tribals.

The agitators found fault with the government for throwing their lives out of the gear. “We are not infringing on the statutory rights of tribals. We are harmoniously living with them. Demolishing the houses is a barbaric act,” Dongre Manoj, a leader of the group said. They however, withdrew their protest when police pacified them.

In the meantime, Collector Rajarshi Shah, in a statement, said that illegal structures were built in a piece of land abutting the agriculture market yard. He stated that notices were served to the occupants and the structures were demolished for violating norms. He requested the public not to construct houses in open lands of the government in villages and towns.
