Hyderabad: Presented by Kona Venkat, Comrade Kalyan is jointly produced by Ventaka Krishna Karnati and Seetha Karnati. Written by Bhanu and Nandu and directed by Janakiram Marella, the film features Sree Vishnu, Mahima Nambiar, Radhika Sarathkumar, Shine Tom Chacko and Upendra Limaye in key roles. The film was released in theatres on October 9. Here is a look at its story and how it fares.

Story

Set in 1994, the story unfolds in a place called Madugula. Kalyan (Sree Vishnu) works as a theatre operator and dreams of eventually becoming the owner of the theatre. His mother, Saraswatamma, is a fan of actor Balakrishna and frequently gets into fan wars, often landing at the police station. Kalyan goes through considerable trouble to get her released each time.

His life takes a turn when Sitara (Mahima Nambiar), whom he believes to be an Odia girl, enters the picture. Struggling with the language barrier, Kalyan goes to great lengths to express his love for her. However, he later discovers that Sitara is actually a Telugu girl.

Kalyan learns that Sitara is in danger because of Bishwas (Upendra Limaye). Determined to rescue her, he transforms into Comrade Kalyan.

What twists and turns follow? Does Kalyan reunite with his beloved? What roles do Special Task Force officer George Kutty (Shine Tom Chacko), Shankaranna (Shatru), Master (Sai Chand), Sattibabu (Satya), Pallam Raju (Prabhas Sreenu) and Sub-Inspector Appalanaidu (Brahmaji) play in the story? The answers unfold on screen.

How is the film?

A serious subject is presented in an extremely silly and comedic manner. Although the film is set in the 1990s, its dialogues and characters’ behaviour seem tailored to today’s Gen Z audience. Beyond claiming to be set in the 1990s, the film does little to recreate the language, mannerisms or atmosphere of that period.

Many dialogues rely on double entendres. The film may be set in the past, but its storytelling and humour are firmly rooted in contemporary trends.

There is always a fine line between Naxalism and the police system. Cinema has often portrayed both sides as heroes, leaving audiences to interpret who is right and who is wrong.

However, Comrade Kalyan approaches this subject primarily as an entertainer. The emotional depth of the story appears to get lost amid the comedy. By the end, viewers are unlikely to find themselves taking sides with either the Naxalites or the police. The film does not leave much room for such contemplation.

Instead, it relies heavily on the comedy featuring Sree Vishnu and Satya. The first half is dominated by Sree Vishnu, Satya and Sudarshan. One might expect the second half to offer more emotional depth or a heartfelt narrative, but it continues with the same silly and illogical humour.

By the climax, everyone on both sides appears to turn good. The idea of an entire group changing its outlook after the hero delivers a speech is a familiar trope in Telugu cinema.

Performances

Coming to the performances, Sree Vishnu delivers a familiar yet entertaining act, making audiences laugh with his distinctive dialogue delivery. Satya’s comic timing needs little introduction. Sudarshan, Upendra Limaye, Balagam Muraleedhar Goud and Srikanth Iyengar also contribute to the humour through their respective roles.

Mahima Nambiar’s character, however, seems to have limited scope. Shine Tom Chacko’s role does not feel particularly fresh either. Brahmaji, Prabhas Sreenu and Raghu Babu make the most of their parts and deliver performances that are engaging within their respective limitations.

Technical aspects

The visuals are good, but the film does not convincingly recreate the atmosphere of the 1990s. The songs work reasonably well on screen.

The dialogues, however, feel more in tune with today’s Jabardasth-style comedy and punchlines than with the era in which the story is set. The art direction, costumes and editing are adequate, while the production values are in keeping with the film’s scale.

Overall, Comrade Kalyan relies heavily on comedy but struggles to balance its humour with the emotional weight of its central subject.
