Congress, BJP workers clash during MLC elections in Telangana’s erstwhile Adilabad

Congress activists attack BJP members alleging that a local Sub-Inspector assaulted their leader, BJP followers pelt stones at them

Adilabad: Except for a clash between activists of the Congress and BJP, elections to Medak-Nizamabad-Karimnagar-Adilabad MLC graduate and teacher segments went off peacefully in the district on Thursday.

Activists of the Congress and BJP clashed with each other at a polling station in Naspur mandal centre of Mancherial district. While the Congress activists attacked the members of the BJP alleging that a local Sub-Inspector assaulted their leader, the BJP followers pelted at them. Ramagundam CP rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

As many as 10,375 graduates exercised franchise out of the total of 14,935 votes in Adilabad district, reflecting polling of 69.47 per cent. A total of 1,478 teachers cast their votes as against the total 1,593 votes in the district, posting polling by 92.78 per cent.

Similarly, 11,374 graduates participated in the voting out of the total 17,141 votes in Nirmal district, indicating polling of 66.36 per cent. A sum of 1,282 teachers cast votes as against the total 1,601 votes in the district, showing a turnout of 81.43 per cent.

Meanwhile, Mancherial district registered 60.48 per cent of voting with 18,701 graduates utilising their right to vote out of the total 30,921 votes. It saw 88.58 per cent of polling in the teachers’ constituency with 1,474 teachers casting their votes as against the total of 1,664 votes.

The followers and supporters of the candidates of the Congress and BJP reportedly distributed Rs 1,000 to each voter seeking their votes in several parts of the erstwhile Adilabad district. Some of the candidates bore travelling expenses of the electors.
