Warangal: A protest staged by Congress workers at the BJP Warangal district office here on Thursday turned violent as cadres of both parties attacked each other with sticks.

Following a call from the TPCC, Congress workers staged the protest alleging that the BJP government at the Centre was acting with political vendetta by illegally including the names of top Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald investment case. Congress workers led by Warangal district Congress president Mohammed Ayub attempted to lay siege to the BJP office by shouting slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Police in large numbers were deployed at the office in view of the protest. When district BJP general secretary Rana Pratap Reddy arrived at the scene, an argument broke out between BJP and Congress workers, who prevented him from entering the office by obstructing his car. Police persuaded Pratap Reddy to leave the spot, but he refused to do so.

The situation soon escalated and workers from both sides attacked each other with sticks and hurled invectives in the presence of the police. A tense atmosphere prevailed in the area for some time after the incident.

The police intervened, dispersed both groups and brought the situation under control. Congress MLAs Revuri Prakash Reddy and Nagaraju, along with MLC Baswaraj Saraiah and others, were detained by the police when they reached the BJP office to prevent further escalation of the situation.

Pratap Reddy and BJYM leader Erragolla Bharath alleged that the Congress workers acted like rowdies and attacked them without any provocation. They demanded that the police take strict action against the Congress workers.
